staff profile

behind the scenes with UYWI staff
name: Carolyn Jones
title: Director of Marketing and Promotions

favorite kind of pizza: Back in the day when I was in youth ministry my favorite pizza was all about the “pizza deal” and the best deal was Papa John’s one-topping large for $5. I loved the peppers and garlic butter on the side (no extra charge). That same pizza costs about $18 now at my neighborhood Papa John’s. Today, my fav is the one I make at home on my Trader Joe’s pizza stone—with as much of any topping as I can possibly pile on.

favorite sports team/sport: You know how it is to grow to love something because someone else is so passionate about it? I can’t help but love football because my husband, Reuben, loves it. But basketball is by far my favorite. I love the pace, the high scoring, and the fact you can identify the players by face instead of their jersey. I’m a Pistons fan. Their 2004 championship win against the Lakers was unforgettable. Nothing beats rooting for the underdog when they win!

I could live without: junk mail and telemarketers (which is kind of ironic coming from the marketing person)

recent good read/flick (why?):
Book: The Kite Runner: A poignant and tragic story that opened my mind to the country and people of Afghanistan. I’m currently reading The Beautiful Fight by Gary Thomas which is challenging me in new ways to allow God to transform my life and ministry by welcoming His presence more and more throughout my day.

Flick: The Great Debaters: The writers may have embellished the real-life story (the debate didn’t happen at Harvard but Oxford—like that really diminishes the team’s accomplishment), but I was captivated and inspired by the story and the characters. While these men and women were victims of the times they weren’t casualties.

3 to 5 favorite weblinks:

I honestly don’t have favorites. The sites I visit are pretty utilitarian so I won’t bore you by listing them.

best tip in ministry: Remember names. When you talk to someone ask questions that allow them to tell you more about what they love. Then remember to meet them there.
